GI endoscopy

Upper GI endoscopy is a procedure in which a doctor uses an endoscope—a flexible tube with a camera—to see the lining of your upper GI tract. A gastroenterologist, surgeon, or other trained health care professional performs the procedure, most often while you receive light sedation to help you relax.

GI endoscopy, also known as upper gastrointestinal endoscopy or esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), is a diagnostic and therapeutic procedure used to examine the upper part of the digestive system, including the esophagus, stomach, and the beginning of the small intestine. It is performed using an endoscope, a thin, flexible tube equipped with a light and a camera. This allows the doctor to view the inside of the digestive tract and detect any abnormalities such as ulcers, inflammation, or growths. The procedure is minimally invasive and helps diagnose various gastrointestinal issues.

Symptoms Requiring GI Endoscopy

GI endoscopy is often recommended when patients experience persistent or unexplained gastrointestinal symptoms, including:

Chronic Heartburn or Acid Reflux

When acid frequently flows back into the esophagus, causing irritation and discomfort.

Difficulty Swallowing (Dysphagia)

A sensation of food sticking in the throat or chest.

Unexplained Abdominal Pain

Recurring pain in the upper abdomen that cannot be explained by other tests.

Nausea and Vomiting

Persistent symptoms without a clear cause.

Gastrointestinal Bleeding

Vomiting blood or passing black, tarry stools, which may indicate bleeding in the upper GI tract.

Unintended Weight Loss

Sudden weight loss without a change in diet or exercise.

Persistent Indigestion or Bloating

Discomfort or fullness after eating, even in the absence of overeating.

If left untreated, these symptoms could indicate serious conditions such as ulcers, esophageal strictures, or cancer.

GI Endoscopy Treatment and Procedure

The procedure is typically performed in the following steps:

Sedation

The patient receives light sedation to relax and reduce discomfort during the procedure.

Insertion of Endoscope

The doctor gently inserts the endoscope through the mouth, guiding it down the throat into the upper GI tract.

Examination

The camera at the end of the endoscope transmits images to a monitor, allowing the doctor to inspect the lining of the esophagus, stomach, and small intestine for any abnormalities.

Tissue Samples

If necessary, small tissue samples (biopsies) may be taken for further analysis.

Treatment Options

In some cases, GI endoscopy can be used to treat certain conditions, such as removing polyps, dilating narrow passages, or stopping bleeding ulcers.

Post-Procedure Care :

After the procedure, patients are monitored as the sedation wears off. Mild throat discomfort is common, but it usually resolves quickly. Most patients can resume normal activities the following day, although it’s advised to avoid driving for the rest of the day due to the sedation. Follow-up care may include discussing biopsy results or additional treatments depending on the findings.
